Lucy... and the art of bag design
Please note that this is a PDF download and should not be shared nor distributed.
This pattern booklet teaches bag-making through intentional fabric design choices rather than random selection. It focuses on creating a cosmetic bag/pouch using a systematic five-fabric approach to achieve professional, cohesive results.
The Five Fabric System includes:
•Fabric 1 (Feature/Star): A dominant focal point with large-scale patterns, bold colours, and strong visual presence
•Fabric 2 (Frame/Border): Small-scale geometric print providing visual separation and breathing space
•Fabrics 3-5 (Supporting/Ensemble):
Three harmonious fabrics considering colour harmony, scale balance, and style cohesion
Following this system, we will examine how various fabrics relate to the final fabric selection - the dominant fabric that will ultimately define the bag's framework, provide structural integrity, and achieve the desired dimensions.
The guide emphasizes understanding fabric relationships, visual weight, and design theory before cutting materials. It encourages flexibility to change decisions during the process, as good designers adapt their initial plans.
The booklet covers fabric selection, colour choices, textural interpretation, and structural
integrity, aiming to develop design instincts for future projects while showcasing fabric collections purposefully.
